October 23

  • In 1885, Bryn Mawr (Pennsylvania) formally opened, the first college in the US to offer advanced degrees to women.
  • In 1910, Blanche Scott became the first woman to solo a public airplane flight.
  • In 1915, 25,000 women marched in NYC, demanding the right to vote.

October 24

  • In 1901, Anna Taylor was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
  • In 1956, in Syracuse, New York, Margaret Ellen Towner became the first woman ordained in the Presbyterian Church.

October 26

  • In 1916, Margaret Sanger was arrested for obscenity (advocating birth control).

October 28

  • In 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York
    Harbor. Women were barred from the ceremony because it
    would be 'too crowded and rough for the ladies,' but a group of women chartered a boat and circled the island singing and shouting women's rights messages.
