  • In 1692, the Salem Witch Trials in the Massachusetts colony officially began with the conviction of Rev. Samuel Parris' West Indian slave, Tituba, for witchcraft.
  • In 1864, Rebecca Lee (US) became the first black woman to receive a medical degree.
  • In 1912, Isabella Goodwin was appointed the first US woman detective (New York, NY).

  • In 1977, Bette Davis was the first woman to receive the Life Achievement Award.

  • In 1879, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments by a woman lawyer (Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood) for the first time.

  • In 1798, Catholic women are forced to do penance for kindling sabbath fires for Jews.
